Student Scholarship Information

The Tennessee Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (TSITE) sponsors a student scholarship program each year for civil engineering students enrolled at a university within the State of Tennessee who have demonstrated a strong commitment in transportation engineering. Solicitations will be made each Spring for applications for the scholarship.

Eligibility:

A scholarship candidate must be enrolled in an undergraduate accredited civil engineering program within the State of Tennessee or a graduate of an accredited program and enrolled in a graduate civil engineering program within the State of Tennessee in the year following nomination. The candidate may be either a full or part time student.

Students meeting these criteria are encouraged to submit applications. Faculty of any accredited civil engineering program within the State of Tennessee may also submit applications on behalf of students. In addition, Members and Affiliates of the Tennessee Section may submit applications for students. The applications must be transmitted using the TSITE Student Scholarship Application Form.

Deadline:  April 15th.

Evaluation:

A Scholarship Committee, comprised of Members of TSITE, will evaluate all applications received and select recipients of the scholarship.

Award:

The scholarship recipient is encouraged to attend the Tennessee Section’s Annual Summer Meeting, which scheduled to be held at the Park Vista Hotel in Gatlinburg. The student’s registration fee at the Annual Meeting shall be waived and a travel expense contribution shall be provided by TSITE.

TSITE will award up to six (6) scholarships as follows:

William L. (Bill) Moore, Jr. Scholarship Award – Bill has been actively involved in ITE since 1971 including serving as President of the Tennessee “Division” in 1975-76. This scholarship was named in his honor in 2004 as a tribute to his commitment and leadership in furthering the transportation profession. The award amount of this scholarship is planned to be $2,000.

John R. Harper Memorial Scholarship – John Harper was a long-time TDOT employee who headed up the Department’s GIS work unit. Proceeds from a charity golf tournament held in his honor each Spring are donated to TSITE and a scholarship given in his name to promote students’ involvement in the transportation field. The award amount of this scholarship will be $2,000.

Billy M. Hart Memorial Scholarship – Billy Marcus Hart was a long-time TDOT employee who began working for TDOT in December 1978 and steadily progressed to Transportation Manager 2 within the Strategic Transportation Investments Division. Proceeds from a charity golf tournament held in his honor each Spring are donated to TSITE and a scholarship given in his name to promote students’ involvement in the transportation field. The award amount of this scholarship will be $2,000.

T. Darcy Sullivan Scholarship Award – Darcy was actively involved in ITE throughout his lifetime beginning in 1961 including serving as President of the Tennessee “Division” in 1976-77. This scholarship was named in his honor in 2007 as a tribute and memorial to his commitment and leadership in furthering the transportation profession. The award amount of this scholarship is planned to be $1,500.

Bill D. Kervin, Jr. Scholarship Award – Bill was an active member of ITE and served both TSITE and our Country admirably, his term as TSITE President in 2004 was interrupted by a military deployment to Iraq as part of the Tennessee Army National Guard. This scholarship was named in his honor in 2015 as a tribute and memorial to his commitment and leadership in furthering the transportation profession. The award amount of this scholarship is planned to be $1,500.

Tennessee Section Undergraduate Scholarship Award – This scholarship is specifically directed to be awarded to an undergraduate student who otherwise meets the previously noted eligibility requirements. The award amount of this scholarship is planned to be $1,500.

Please note that the final amounts of the five scholarships other than the John R. Harper Memorial Scholarship will be determined by the actual number of applicants and the number who are determined to merit an award for the year. If fewer than four applicants are awarded then a greater share of funds for each will be available and can be awarded at the discretion of the TSITE Scholarship Committee.
